Organic Goji, better known here as Chinese wolfberry, has always been—and remains—one of the treasures of traditional Chinese medicine (it is officially included in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia).

It is considered a medicinal plant that promotes longevity and strength. According to ancient Chinese masters, goji berries strengthen our immune system, support the kidneys, improve eyesight, protect the liver, improve blood circulation, and speed up metabolism. They contain numerous substances important to the human body whose pharmacological effects have been demonstrated. Many clinical studies have also been conducted. Antioxidant, immunomodulatory, antitumor, neuroprotective, radioprotective, antidiabetic, anti-osteoporotic, hepatoprotective, and hypolipidemic effects have been identified (Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Science). 

Energetic effects

An effect against various types of tumor cells has been recorded, e.g., lung, cervical, breast, colon, stomach, liver, and prostate carcinomas, as well as against leukemia cells. The antitumor action is mediated by several mechanisms: inhibition of tumor cell proliferation, induction of apoptosis (cell death), and regulation (arrest) of the cell cycle in the G2/M phase. The immunomodulatory action of goji also contributes to its antitumor effect. A clinical study was conducted on 79 patients with cancer. The administered LBP (Lycium barbarum polysaccharides – see below) had a beneficial effect, and an enhanced effect of some cytostatic drugs was reported. Goji also reduces the adverse effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy and may therefore serve as a suitable adjunct to standard treatment for cancer (An evidence-based update on the pharmacological activities and possible molecular targets of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides. Important constituents include polysaccharides, monosaccharides (arabinose, galactose, xylose), glycoproteins, glycolipids, amino acids, peptides, flavonoids and other phenolic compounds (rutin, chlorogenic acid, and protocatechuic acid), coumarins (scopoletin), vitamins C, B1, B2, B6, and B12, beta-carotenoids (zeaxanthin, beta-carotene, lutein, lycopene), vitamin E, alkaloids (calystegine, kukoamine, betaine), organic acids, aromatic compounds, cerebrosides, diterpenes (lyciumosides), triterpenes, and steroids (beta-sitosterol). Particular attention should be paid to the specific proteoglycan polysaccharides (LBP – Lycium barbarum polysaccharides). This special mixture of polysaccharides and proteoglycans, whose name is derived from the Latin name of goji, is an exceptionally powerful antioxidant, slows the aging process, and increases resistance to adverse environmental factors. Goji is also recognized by other traditional medical systems, such as Korean and Japanese medicine, and especially Tibetan medicine, which is the cradle not only of its origin but also of its use.

Only authentic goji from the Tibetan region may be called true Goji. This name was given to the fruit by scientists at the Tanaduk Botanical Research Institute (TBRI) as early as 1973. Four years later, the world learned about Goji for the first time. It was then that the first packages of this treasure arrived on the shelves of Tenzing Momo Apothecary in Seattle, USA. True Goji is often deliberately confused with wolfberry (Lycium barbarum), which differs not only botanically but also grows mostly in temperate regions (Mongolia, China), and its active compounds are far less interesting. The Dalai Lama's Institute of Tibetan Medicine also plays an important role here in preserving the true essence of Goji, sustainable cultivation methods, and the protection of the local environment.
